Getting Away With Abuse

13 Oct

Abuse?!? What do you mean by abuse? Actually I mean abusing the Bible. I just got back from an incredibly frustrating conference all about ‘leadership’. There were quite a few frustrations actually: That it’s been great in the past but this year was terrible, that I got out of bed two days running to go, that time after time the gospel was reduced from eternal hope to present comforts and the idea that Jesus work was ‘finished’ was rubbished in favour of it merely being the start of our social action.

What upset me most though (and I suppose the twisted gospel that was being touted falls into this catagory) was how one chap abused God’s Words. I can’t go into too much detail but lets just say he read out the following;

7Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us… 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.”

It’s almost from 1 John 4 (NASB) look it up to see what was ‘missed out’ or ‘skipped over’. Here’s what was done with it…

It was explained that we should be ‘channels’ for God’s ‘force’ of love. And that if we expected God to love others we should Love them. Now apart from calling God’s love a force, my problem was really that he finshed teh sentence half way through verse 11. “We know God loves us…” but apparently it wasn’t importnat to mention how we know God loves us or how His love is demonstarted. I suppose some one dyinig because of us is pretty offensive…I might leave it out in future.

But you kind of expect lazy speakers to do that, especially when taklking about substitutuion isn’t vouge. Here’s what really almost made me sick. The expostition of verse 15 was that we as leaders should be confessers…to our congrigation when we make bad judgement calls or ‘programmes’ we start don’t go to plan!?!?! if you can see anything close to that then let me know and i’ll buy you a beer! It’s just outrageous!!!

What was MORE frustratinig was that I was in a room of Church ‘leaders’ and no one seemed to notice! Because the speaker was quite funny…we missed it!

What was encouraging was that my wife didn’t miss it. I was really encouraged by that because despite her being more inteligent than me and more spiritual, she’s not as academic in terms of theology. She was angrier than I was. Well done Char, shame on us South Wales Leaders for sitting through another day of the drivel!

he missed out the propitiation/atoning sacrifice? God hasn’t finished sanctifying my anger so i probably would have punched the speaker.

Continuing the anger theme … Yesterday i saw a notice on warwick uni website for an event where a female anglican vicar (not getting into that row) who had a scientifi background was going to say how embryos aren’t humans and that we can use them for experiments. i would have turned up in my “would it bother us more if we used guns” t shirt and the next day would have a lot of repenting to do.

Voila what things have been making larry angry..

pps if your exegesis leads you to confessing to each other from v 15 you have already been drinking beer for at least 5 days straight.

I was chatting with Thomas the Clewer earlier and he noticed these abuses as well.

Was he made with rage about it?!? Believe me, it was worse than I am making out…I’m too shocked to write coherently!

Sammy mate, I wasn’t there for the day you are talking about, but i think you would need to write so much more to do justice for the entire conference. I was only there for the Saturday and I couldn’t believe that i missed footy for this pile of poo. I just cannot get over the talk that focused on Mother Tereasa (spell check plz)…why? I was falling asleep in that talk but heard enough to know that i shall never return to the said conference. I cannot understand that at a leadership conference for church leadrers, why the Bible was not the main source if not the only source for us to examine and follow. I do not need to learn how to manage a co-orperate company, I don’t need to know how someone can turn a $1 billion profit into $60 billion or whatever he said. What I want is for the word of God, the amazing grace and mercy that he has shown us to be proclaimed. No more of this cack!!!!
I shall never return to this conference ever!!!!I infact partly blame Sammy for me being there ;p

Let’s just call it Wildberry Cack.

There were some good ‘sound bites’ to take away from the conference mind you (he says looking for the aluminium lining)

I just realised I wrote this in July. I was obviously fed up of the same poo approach to 1 John 4.
