Jerry Bridges – Holiness

Ephesians 4:22-end –  22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

25Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26“In your anger do not sin”[d]: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27and do not give the devil a foothold. 28He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.

29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Put off – Put on
We can’t just take stuff off but need to redress ourselves in righteousness…put on the fruit of the Spirit (the additional benefit of this will be to make the gospel appealing to non-believers).

23 Be made new in the attitude of your mind. This is the key to the putting off/on process. Like a pair off scissors needs both blades working in tandem to achieve the desired result there is still a need for a pivot. The pivot in the put off/on scenario is exposing our minds to Scripture.

Why is it as Christians we always seek help putting things off…but never putting on. Too often our Christian life is about putting off and forgetting to put on.

he three areas Paul addresses in Ephesians 3 are our integrity, se.xual purity and interpersonal relationship

Integrity (V25 & 28)

Paul puts truth in aposotion to falsehood. Not exactly opposite, you stop lying without telling the truth. We need to be people of ‘full discloser.’
For example, for people who had previously been theives, it is not good enough to stop stealing but there is a need to start giving. They need to go from aquiring that which isn’t theirs to giving away that which is.

There are three possible attitudes here:

  1. The thief – that’s yours, I’ll take it
  2. The ‘normal person’ – this is mine, I’ll keep it
  3. The believer – this is Gods, you can have it.

Se.xual Purity

In terms of se.xual immorality, not only should it not happen, it shouldn’t really be spoken about among us. We shouldn’t enjoy reading, talking or hearing about the impurities of others.

It requires radicul surgery, Jesus said pluck out your eyes so we should do what ever it o we have to do to stop sin.

Interpersonal Relationships

Often considered ‘respectable sins’, things we’d normally tolerate in our lives. But by weight of text this is as important to Paul as the combination of the previous two. Thing like gossip, sarcasm. The tounge is a powerful tool for sin. Not just rudeness, but talking people down when we should be building them up.

Three questions to ask before we speak:

  1. Is what we are saying true?  (If it’s not we are slandering)
  2. Is it nessicary? (Often nothing needs to be said)
  3. Is it kind? (Put on that which will build up)

V30 – Why does Paul talk about grieving the Holy Spirit here, with regards personal relationships? Why not after thieving or se.xual imorality? This is the emphasis the Spirit wants because it’s often overlooked. Pride, unforgiveness. When these reign we grieve the Spirit and it’s an epadenic we don’t even care about.

Where do we get the power to put all this right?

Can we do it ourselves? Nope. Our ‘flesh’ is warring against the spirit. Gorilla warfare. We have new motors, but they have no power in themselves. They need a power source. Their power is the Holy Spirit.
