False Love? Real Love?

10 Nov

How well does our view of love match up with the real thing? Has our culture and our selfish nature caused us to twist love, degrade it and yet elevate it to a status it shouldn’t have?

In 1 John we read a lot about love, but what is the love that John is writing about? What is true love?

50 First DatesIf our songs, tv shows and films are to be believed then ‘love’ is something that seeks comfort and a fulfilment of desires. Love is fleeting, and heads for the door at the first sign of trouble. Love is about me being happy. Love is all about the present, rarely about the future.

If that’s the case, how do we know that God loves us? Is it because we just feel it? Is it because we real engaged with worship on Sunday? is it because we are well-loved by friends, family and other Christians? Is it because we enjoy serving God in return?

If love is really like that and we ‘know’ God loves us for those reasons, we’ll end up in real trouble. We’ll think God doesn’t love us when the inevitable happens and we; don’t just feel it, haven’t enjoyed the songs at church, are treated badly by others, feel like serving is a burden.

There’s no way that the love of God is so fleeting. Moreover, if love is really just about me and happiness now, our world will fall apart when suffering comes, when  we struggle with sin, when people let us down under the pressure our false love has put them under.

John writes (chapter 4):

9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

See it? God’s love (that is what true love is after all) is anything but like the false love we seem to choose for ourselves. God’s love isn’t about comfort…Jesus gave it all up to come into the world. Wow. Real Love gives up for others.

God’s love isn’t about giving us what we want…Jesus came to give life to those who didn’t even know they needed it! Real Love meets needs not wants.

God’s love isn’t about avoiding ugly truths…Jesus met our ugly truth head on, even dying on a Cross because of it. Real Love doesn’t ignore problems.

God’s love isn’t about the immediate…Jesus gives life now and for eternity. Real Love looks at the long-term.

In fact it might be considered offensive to use the same word, ‘love’ to describe them both. God’s love is Real Love, our love is false love.

Which do you want in your life?
