Page CXVI Jubilee

5 Mar

PAGE-CXVI-HYMNS-Jubilee-COVERI’ve been a massive fan of Page CXVI from the day dot, pointing you towards their new albums as they’ve trickled out over the last few years. I was chuffed last week to get this email in the post…

To celebrate 7 years of making music together, the members of Page CXVI and The Autumn Film are giving away their entire music catalog for 7 weeks. Between re-arranging the classic hymns, to creating beautiful emotive indie pop music, the band has recorded 11 albums together. Please join them in celebrating this jubilee by catching up on the records you’ve missed or download the entire catalog.

I couldn’t recommend heartily enough jumping on the Page CXVI bandwagon. They really a doing a great job. Go download and be refreshed!

Page CXVI ‘HYMNS II’ : Review

4 May

SSAR (single sentence album review): Buy both albums and put on shuffle

A week has come and gone since the release of Page CXVI’s second album, Hymns II (although the albums, at 7 songs each, are more like EP’s). I have to say I’ve enjoyed it…with a few caveats.

1) This second album does not reach the same heights that the first album does, be that in terms of energy, originality or creative expression. Think of the re-imaging of In Christ Alone on the first album. No song is so ‘re-invented’ on Hymns II.  Neither does a song so creatively express the original intent as did the merging of Joy and It is Well. And the high energy guitar and drums seem almost totally absent.

2) The hymns just isn’t as good. This album feels a bit like a list of songs that didn’t make the original cut. Many of the songs have been re-done recently by the likes of Mars Hill or Sovereign Grace and I’m hard pushed to find a reason why the Page CXVI version is better.

All in all this second album is fine, it’s just that the first album was great. My advice (and I’ve been practising what I preach) is to get both albums, add to a single playlist and put on shuffle.

New Page CXVI Hymns Album – Free GiveAway

27 Apr

I’m guessing you’ve already heard of Page CXVI. They appeared a while back with a fantastic album of hymns that had been reset to their own style of music.

The album has been massively successful and has been played to death in my house at least.

In anticipation of the launch of their new album, inventively titled ‘Hymns II’ they are offering a free download of the original hymns album.

All you have to do is click here and your as good as done.

Warning: Downloading the Hymns I album for free will make you want to download the new album when it comes out.

The offer of free download for Hymns I runs from April 27th until May 4th.

New ‘Songs’ Page

24 Mar

The observant ammongst you may have noticed that I recenlty (last Monday) added a ‘songs‘ page to my blog. It’s available right up there ^ in the navigation bar, nestling comfortably between ‘ebooks’ and ‘All About Me’.

The content? Well if you go to the page you’ll find some pdf’s of lyrics and lyric+guitar chords to some hymns I’ve worked on over the last year or so.

My intent (as I’ve written on the page) is to make the fantastic truths contained in some of these old hymns as accessible as possible to the congregation I serve. Be that by a slight change in lyrics or a slight change musically to suit the band/feel we have in my church.

I’m leaving space to add some mp3’s into the mix to give you an idea of the melody that goes over the top of the guitar chords I’ve posted. (If anyone has any idea how I can simply record a vocal, guitar, bass and some drum samples and then edit them up a bit I’d be most appreciative!)

So please by all means go and check it out. So far there are only four songs that I’ve really given any time to. Others are in the pipeline and suggestions are taken.
